What is the Symbolism of the Tartan?
The tartan is an ancient symbol of the specific plaid pattern and colors that identified the families (clans) of Scotland. It was mainly worn by the Highlanders. After the Jocobites were defeated at the battle of Culloden in 1746, wearing tartans became banned during their occupation. After regaining their independence, Scotland reinstated the wearing of their tartans and it became a celebration of their identity, history and culture. Today tartans connect us to our ancestors through remembrance.
